2024 YEAR IN REVIEW
ALBUM OF THE YEAR…
MJ LENDERMAN: MANNING FIREWORKS
It’s tempting to call MJ Lenderman’s music “divorced dad rock.” With Bob Dylan references built into grim lines like “How many roads must a man walk down ‘til he learns / He’s just a jerk who flirts with the clergy nurse ‘til it burns,” it’s easy to see why. But this album is relentlessly addictive to even the least divorced, least male among us. Click here to read the full review.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR…
DRUG CHURCH: PRUDE
Drug Church play straight to the point, no bullshit, tight-as-hell melodic hardcore. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if it’s yours, no one is doing it better than this band. Prude was my most anticipated release of 2024 and it initially felt like too obvious of a pick for album of the year. Then again, what better choice than music from a band on the rise that lives up to the hype?

ALBUM OF THE YEAR…
CHANEL BEADS: YOUR DAY WILL COME
Your Day Will Come, the debut album from New York’s Chanel Beads, underscored my whole summer. Wading through the muggy haze of July, the music in my headphones mirrored the humidity and heat I felt on my skin. I listened at 6 AM while opening at the coffee shop, and at 11 PM as I lay in bed under the breeze of my window unit. The album pulls you into a dreamstate and doesn’t let go until the elctric viola is quiet and the synth stops twinkling.
